Oil and
Acrylic Painter
Phyllis Halsted Freedman,
an award-winning oil and acrylic painter, is fascinated by the interplay
of color. Ever since she took her first art classes at Michigan State
University more than 50 years ago, she has aspired to record her
impressions of the natural world with her palette, regardless of the whims
of the art world.
"My heroes are
Bonnard and Matisse," she says. "I love the way in which they
use color so exuberantly. Influenced by them, I use color to emphasize
different planes and provide an emotional setting."
Over the years, she has
had many one-person exhibitions and taken part in numerous juried shows.
Her paintings range from intimate still lifes and portraits to landscapes
and large abstracts. She studied at the University of Michigan and had
private lessons with Sam Feinstein – a student of Hans Hofmann – as
well as Leon Golub.
She has exhibited in many
corporate locations, including Johnson and Johnson and AT&T.
Currently, her work is displayed in numerous private collections and at
the New Brunswick Scientific Company.
