I’ve spent most of my life gardening and pulling apart flowers to understand what’s really going on. Organic shapes and the reoccurring patterns in nature fascinate me. For the magnified views of leaves I generally work from photos I take while hiking or visiting gardens. Unfortunately, I have lost some very promising leaves to overzealous weeders! The leaves are mainly an additive process where I lay everything down in 2H pencil and lift for highlights. The watercolors are an additive process as well, but I work from sketches. I studied with Ana Soto-Canino, director of the Academy of Art of Highland Park and Gallery, for 5 years. And I have taken courses in botanical illustration at the New York Botanical Gardens.
